Osaka won against Su-Wei Hsieh 6-2, 6-2 after just over an hour of play. Next opponent: Serena Williams or Simona Halep.

Osaka achieved 24 winners with 14 mistakes without hardship, Hsieh was here with 14 or 23 in the negative area. Especially with the first serve of the world number three, she had big problems, Osaka scored 23 out of 25 points. Osaka had 12 break chances, they took 4.

The tricky Hsieh (WTA No. 71) made it to the quarterfinals quite surprisingly, including after victories over Bianca Andreescu and Marketa Vondrousova.

Osaka mostly had their problems with Hsieh so far, four of the five previous encounters were over three sets. In 2019 in Miami, Hsieh even won.
