Australian Open: victories for Pliskova and Bencic - Maria Sharapova is out

The semi-finalist of last year defeated the French Kristina Mladenovic 6: 1, 7: 5 in her opening match and now faces Laura Siegemund (Metzingen) or Coco Vandeweghe (USA).
Swiss number six Belinda Bencic also reached the second round with a 6: 3, 7: 5. In contrast, the number twelve seeded British Johanna Konta failed with a 4: 6, 2: 6 at the 78th place in the world rankings Ons Jabeur.
Maria Sharapova has already left. The winner from 2008 lost to Croatian Donna Vekic 3: 6 and 4: 6. Sharapova, recently injured again and again, will drop from the top 350 in the world rankings.
