What a missed opportunity by Alexander Zverev! Two days after his impressive success against Carlos Alcaraz, German number one Daniil Medvedev was defeated 7:5, 6:3, 6:7 (4), 6:7 (5) and 4:6. Zverev was very close to victory, especially in the tiebreak of the fourth set. It was only Zverev's second defeat after leading the set 2-0 - the first was in the final of the US Open 2020 against Dominic Thiem.

Zverev started strong and quickly took a 4-1 lead with two breaks. But Medvedev fought his way back into the set point by point - only to give up his serve again at 5:5. Zverev served out. And immediately followed up in the second round.

In the third act, Medvedev had a break point in the ninth game but missed a forehand. There were no further special incidents until the tiebreak. A few minutes later, Daniil Medvedev, almost out of nowhere, caught up a set after a playing time of 2:45 hours.

In the fourth round, the servers continued to dominate - until Medvedev earned a break point in the eighth game, which Zverev fended off with a serve into the man. Like the second two rallies later. So back to the tiebreak. Everything went smoothly until 4:4 - then Medvedev made a double fault - but equalized again with the mini-break to 5:5 and was lucky on the next return. And managed to equalize the set with an ace.

In the decision, when the score was 2:2, Zverev invited Medvedev to two break points with a simple volley error, but initially repaired his mishap. In the 2021 US Open champion's third opportunity, Zverev's forehand ended up in the net. After 4:18 hours of play, Medvedev had his first match point. And he sat because Alexander Zverev put a ball out of bounds.

Jannik Sinner is waiting in the final on Sunday. The South Tyrolean reached the final of a Grand Slam tournament for the first time with a 6:1, 6:2, 6:7 (6) and 6:3 against record champion Novak Djokovic .
