Daniil, you are known as a great football fan, especially a great Bayern fan. How did that develop?
Daniil Medvedev: To be honest, I really fell in love with football and Bavaria when I was around 12 years old. It started right there. But I liked Bavaria a lot before that. I remember when I was 6 years old, and Bavaria was really good at the beginning of the 2000s, that I always said to my parents: Bavaria plays on television, we have to watch it. But when I was 12 things really started and I said to myself: Hey, I need a team now.
Bayern gave you a jersey after your triumph at the ATP Finals.
Medvedev: Exactly, they sent me some things, that was super nice. I always use number 33 for jerseys because I'm such a big fan of Mario Gomez. He did such great things when he played for Bayern - I loved him so much. He was by far my absolute favorite player and because of him alone 33 is my favorite number.
But why Mario Gomez of all people?
Medvedev: I think it has something to do with the fact that I used to be a striker when I was a youth player. I was also tall and had no technique. (laughs) But I also scored goals. Mario was just fantastic and somehow he was very close to me in his whole way. But Arjen Robben was also brilliant, he was like a magician on the pitch.
