Dominic Thiem still treats himself to a week of training, then there is a return to the tennis circuit at the ATP Masters 1000 tournament in Madrid. On Ash. And at an event where Thiem has already reached the finals twice. That would be a pretty ambitious goal for the 2021 edition - because the big competitors like Novak Djokovic , Rafael Nadal , Stefanos Tsitsipas or Andrey Rublev are full of juice and have already grooved themselves on sand.

Austria's number one has at least two major projects in the current tennis season. There would be a good performance at the Olympic Games in Tokyo in the summer (if they actually take place). And of course the first victory at the French Open in Paris. By then at the latest, Boris Becker, as an expert for the broadcasting TV station Eurospport, will be very close to Thiem again. In the podcast "The Yellow from the Ball", the three-time Wimbledon champion commented on Thiem's so far rather mixed season.

Becker - Thiem needs a different approach

"Now the environment is required, which has to make it clear to him: 'Boy, you are one of the top favorites in Paris.' At 27, Dominic is in the prime of tennis, but needs a different approach to better deal with pressure, "says Becker. This pressure should actually have dropped with the win of the US Open 2020. Instead, Thiem had complained in Dubai that he was struggling with the burden of going into a tournament as a Grand Slam champion and thus at least a co-favorite.

Boris Becker would have suspected a different effect. "If you've won your first Grand Slam tournament, you've tasted blood and you're hot for the next title." Becker himself celebrated a total of six triumphs in the majors, only the victory in Roland Garros was denied him. There is no question that this can be attributed to the two-time finalist Dominic Thiem. And he still has a little time to get in shape.
