Great honor for Facundo Lugones: The Argentinean was voted the best coach of the past tennis season by his coaching colleagues. Lugones led his protégé Cameron Norrie to the titles in Los Cabos (250) and Indian Wells (1000) that year. In 2021, Norrie ended up being number twelve in the world.
"I'm incredibly happy. I never thought I could win this award. It's unreal. But that's the beauty of this sport, that anything can happen," Lugones was quoted on the ATP website as saying. "First of all, I'd like to thank Cam for being an animal and for getting through all the tough fights that eventually brought me the award."
Lugones, who has been working with Norrie since 2017, prevailed against Craig Boynton (Hubert Hurkacz), Gilles Cervara (Daniil Medvedev), Juan Carlos Ferrero (Carlos Alcaraz) and Christian Ruud (Casper Ruud) in the fight for the award. "I would like to thank everyone who voted for me and all the coaches who always had advice for me or wanted to teach me something," said Lugones.
The other winners of the ATP Awards 2021 will be announced later this week. Andy Murray, Rafael Nadal and Carlos Alcaraz, among others, could also win prizes .
