This was announced by the former number six in the world rankings on Tuesday on Twitter. The 31-year-old was diagnosed with Hodgkin's lymphoma, a malignant tumor in the lymphatic system.

"I have to face a complicated reality. It is time to accept this and try to move forward with confidence on medical advice. I will always be positive despite the adversity," wrote Suarez Navarro. Last December, she announced that she would end her career after 2020.

Many colleagues immediately gave encouraging words. "If I know someone who can handle it, then it's you," wrote two-time Wimbledon winner Petra Kvitova from the Czech Republic on social media: "You are a fighter and a great champion with a lot of positive energy." World number two Simona Halep (Romania) wrote: "I think of you and know that a strong and special person like you can get through it." There was also encouragement from Novak Djokovic. "I have no doubt that you will get through this," tweeted the 17-time Grand Slam champion: "Stay positive and come back soon."
