Julia Görges in front of Bianca Andreescu - that's what it looked like at the beginning of 2019

Görges had started the past season in Auckland with the final win against Bianca Andreescu. Who would have thought at the time that the Canadian who had qualified for the main draw would win the Indian Wells, Toronto and especially the US Open tournaments? On the way to the final Andreescu had defeated with Caroline Wozniacki the then number one event, then Venus Williams and Su-Wei Hsieh.

Also announced for the 2020 event is Serena Williams, who still aspires to her 24th singles success in a Grand Slam tournament. The last one was in early 2017 at the Australian Open. By the way, prior to that tournament, Serena was also in Auckland - losing to Madison Brengle in round two.

New in the field will be Cori Gauff. The still 15-year-old, not least by her tournament victory in Linz up to rank 69 in the WTA World Ranking played forward. And although Gauff started the year 2019 on the ITF tour, she won her first high-level match in Miami. Against Catherine McNally, with whom Gauff likes to play and successfully doubles. The first big single test is scheduled for the 2020 season but in Auckland. Maybe against reigning champion Julia Görges, against whom Gauff had been successful in pair running at the US Open with McNally.
