"I am a family man," said the man from Kempen, son of a Ukrainian father and a Russian mother, in an interview with Bild am Sonntag : "The family is very large. We are 80 to 100 people when we meet. My grandpa has five siblings alone. "

He "learned a lot of discipline" from his grandparents at an early age. His father, a former amateur boxer, then brought him to tennis. "He started to work hard with me because we had no money to finance tennis just for fun," said Altmaier. His father had no idea about tennis at the time, he "had to read it first". The 22-year-old revealed that he was also rather inexperienced: "Before the first tournament, I didn't even know how to count the points."

Daniel Altmaier has very precise ideas for the time after tennis. "Regardless of whether I have little money or 500 million euros in my account at the end of my career: I will definitely not stop working," he said. It is important "that my children see me work and learn. My children should know more than I do. Families should become wiser over generations."
