Medvedev explained on social media that he had been playing with a "small hernia" in the past few months - apparently a fracture of the abdominal wall. /

He and his team have now decided to have a small operation carried out to fix the problem. "I will probably be out for a month or two and will work hard to get back on the pitch as soon as possible," the 26-year-old continued.

Medvedev will miss most if not all of the clay court season. Or is it enough for the French Open? This year they start on May 22nd.

Medvedev on sand: "It's a bad surface!"

On the other hand, it is conceivable that "Meddy" is preparing directly for the lawn season, especially since he has made no great secret of his dislike of the red ashes in the past.

In 2021, he declared "not to like anything about this underground", also because you get dirty. In Madrid he cursed loudly: "I don't want to play on this surface!" He responded to a hint that he was ruining the floor with his racket: "It's already broken. It's a bad surface. I can't damage a bad surface."

Medvedev doesn't have too much to defend on clay

The good thing for Medvedev: He doesn't have too many points to defend on sand. In Madrid he was eliminated in the round of 16 in 2021, in Rome at the start. In Roland Garros he became friends with Asche and at least reached the quarterfinals, where he ended up against the eventual finalist Stefanos Tsitsipas.

The fight for number 1 could still remain exciting: competitor Novak Djokovic made significantly more points with a final in Rome and tournament victories in Belgrade and Roland Garros, which must be worked off.
