Daniil Medvedev: All good things come in threes

With the victory at the US Open, Daniil Medvedev won his first Grand Slam title last season. It was one of four individual titles in 2021 that the 25-year-old finished second behind 20-time Grand Slam winner Novak Djokovic.

With the Russian team, Medvedev also won the two trophies at the ATP Cup and Davis Cup. So it is not really surprising that the man from Moscow was named the best Russian athlete of the year for the third time in a row.

"All of the seasons in my career have been special in their own way and have led to something bigger. I've gained experience of victory, developed myself further and found my own style. But I will never forget the rest of my career either, "said Medvedev in the course of the award.

Disappointment in Tokyo

While the 25-year-old unsurprisingly described the final victory over Djokovic at the US Open as his most unforgettable match of the 2021 season, Medvedev also spoke about the bitterest defeat: It would have set it at the Olympic Games against Pablo Carreno Busta.

"I really wanted to win a medal in Tokyo, so it was very disappointing to be eliminated in the quarter-finals," said Medvedev. Soon the world number two could give his compatriots more joy again: Russia is the big favorite in the ATP Cup, which starts on January 1st.
