Rublev won against Borna Gojo 6: 4 and 7: 6 (5) and put his team in the lead. Should Daniil Medvedev win against Marin Cilic in the top singles, Russia would have won the Davis Cup in 2021.

Gojo, only number 279 in the ATP ranking, fought back bravely. Rublev, however, was inviolable, especially when it came to his own service, and did not allow a breakball during the entire match. Gojo, on the other hand, had to accept eight, and he fought off seven; all five in round 2. Here he saved himself in the tiebreak, and even if Rublev led twice with mini-break, he did not give up and almost got two set balls with his own 5: 4 lead: When Rublev served, he risked in the rally a strong backhand longline and stormed forward - but Rublev passed him in world-class fashion from full extension to equalize. At the match point, a backhand from Gojo sailed out of bounds.

Daniil Medvedev has it in hand to give Russia the victory ( here in the live ticker ).

Russia reached the final on Saturday after beating Germany 2-1. Croatia defeated Serbia on Friday.
