The conditions ahead of the quarter-finals at the ATP Masters 1000 event in Paris between Gael Monfils and Denis Shapovalov were clear: In a Monfils victory, the Frenchman would qualify for the ATP Finals in London, in a defeat would Matteo Berrettini the ticket to solve for the last tournament of the year.

The atmosphere at the Center Court in Paris-Bercy initially reminded of old Davis Cup times, but after a few minutes, the audience had to realize that Denis Shapovalov had the better tennis on that day than Monfils available.

Shapovalov with impressive performance

This should not change throughout the match, Shapovalov won after a sensational performance significantly with 6: 2 and 6: 2. The youngster will face Rafael Nadal or Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the semi-finals and will be among the top 20 in the world ranking list next week.

The success of the Canadian qualified Matteo Berrettini for the first time for the ATP Finals. The Italian, who had already failed Tsonga in the second round in Paris, won the tournaments in Stuttgart and Budapest this year and reached the semi-finals at the US Open.

Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer, Daniil Medvedev, Dominic Thiem, Stefanos Tsitsipas, Alexander Zverev and Matteo Berrettini will be lining up for the finals on 10th November. The draw will take place on Tuesday.
