Alexander Zverev started the controversial Diriyah Tennis Cup with a win. The German Olympic champion prevailed in the first round against his good friend Dominic Thiem 10: 8 and 10: 7 and is thus in the quarterfinals of the exhibition tournament in Saudi Arabia.

Zverev, who made his comeback in Saudi Arabia after an injury break of around six months, showed a strong performance against Thiem, especially on his own serve, and knew how to benefit from it given the short format. The twelfth in the world rankings only needed about 20 minutes to win.

Zverev will face Daniil Medvedev in the quarter-finals on Thursday afternoon (second match after 12:00 p.m. CET), Thiem will only continue in doubles on Friday.
