In the last few weeks it has become quiet about Dominic Thiem. Rare public appearances at the side of friend Lili Paul-Roncalli ebbed quickly, from a sporting point of view, the entire Thiem team exercised restraint. The US Open, according to the reading, would be close, but tennis fans should look forward to a return of the Lower Austrian in the calendar year 2021.

Now Thiem himself recently spoke up a rare time and was a guest on the largest Austrian radio station Ö3. He felt "in top shape", explained the 27-year-old there. A circumstance that is primarily due to the long time that Thiem had invested in fitness training in recent weeks. "I was allowed to do everything that didn't put a strain on the wrist, including the upper body and shoulder, as long as the wrist was stable," explained the Austrian.

Thiem: "Maybe that's the good thing"

The training turned out to be quite varied, as Thiem emphasized: "I ran many kilometers, including footwork, playing tennis with my left hand ... so there is a lot." The US Open winner from last year was also able to take off the splint a few days ago, and training on the batting arm can now begin. The big goal: without a doubt the US Open.

Thiem's physical condition could give hope in this endeavor, he explained: "Perhaps that is the good thing - if there is something positive about the injury - that it will hopefully not take as long before I can come back when I come back with me can play on the right because I am physically in top shape, " the courier quoted the world number six.

"Doesn't have to make everything public"

In addition to his fitness level, Thiem also spoke at Ö3 about the fact that little is known about the private and love life of the Austrian tennis star. "I think you don't have to share everything and make it public if you don't want to," said the Lichtenwörther. Nevertheless, there are of course people who would seek precisely this media attention. "But I think you have to respect it if someone wants to keep it private."

In addition to his girlfriend Lili, the Austrian could always count on the support of his family in this difficult 2021 season - which also plays a decisive role in the team of the world number six. "My family works in my company and that's a good thing. Because the family are the ones you can trust one hundred percent without ifs and buts. That's why it's important that they always stay with them - and always in the closest circle stick with it. "
