Dominic Thiem can call himself winner of the Generali Austrian Pro Series after his final victory over David Pichler

The fact that Dominic Thiem is in the final of the Generali Austrian Pro Series should not have surprised anyone. That his opponent was not called Dennis Novak, Sebastian Ofner, or Jürgen Melzer was much more difficult to predict. It was David Pichler who surprisingly prevailed over Jürgen Melzer and Sebastian Ofner in the group phase of the Final-8 and thus secured a second duel with the third in the world rankings, Dominic Thiem. The second duel is because the two already faced each other in the first group phase.

However, this was a duel that David Pichler will not particularly like to remember, since Thiem gave him the maximum penalty with 6: 0 and 6: 0. In this match it appeared that Pichler could not get through against Dominic Thiem, had not the weapons to force the Lichtenwörther to make mistakes. Before the final, the motto for the current national champions was clear: try to keep the game open for as long as possible.

Thiem with the early break

The Burgenland succeeded quite well at the beginning when he started the final with a serve game and was able to win more games after one game than he did in the first duel with the tournament favorite. However, this joy did not last long, in the next service game Pichlers the Lichtenwörther put on, earned a breakball and used the first one after David Pichler tried again with an underarm service.

However, the resistance was by no means broken at the Burgenland, Pichler continued to try a lot, high risk went from the baseline. That went well with the game win to 2: 3, but with serve Dominic Thiem there was nothing to get in this match for David Pichler. And so it was again the big favorite who grabbed his opponent's serve and served a little later to 6: 2.

Another 6-0

The reigning state champion should then no longer recover from this, Dominic Thiem appeared too concentrated in this final. The third in the world rankings grabbed two quick breaks and made the decision in this endgame so early. Again David Pichler had to watch Dominic Thiem give him the maximum sentence in one sentence. The third 6-0 in the fourth set against David Pichler was synonymous with the final success for Dominic Thiem.

Only Sebastian Ofner was able to defeat the third place in the world rankings during the Generali Austrian Pro Series. For Thiem, it continues on the weekend when the Lichtenwörther opens Mouratoglou's "Ultimate Tennis Showdown".
