Dominic Thiem ends his season

Dominic Thiem announced his early end of the season on Thursday. As the Austrian announced in the press conference after his knockout round at the Erste Bank Open in Vienna, he will no longer play a tournament this year. "We decided that I would focus fully on preparation," said the 29-year-old.

The decisive factor in Thiem's decision was that he now received 45 instead of 25 points for his place in the round of 16 in Vienna. The reason for this, according to the Austrian, is apparently a mistake in connection with the ATP 250 tournament in Cordoba. The ATP informed him after the end against Daniil Medvedev. Thiem initially wanted to start the clay court tournament in South America with a protected ranking, but then had to cancel his participation at short notice. The Lichtenwörther could not give any further details. A request from tennisnet.com to the ATP in this regard remained unanswered for the time being.

At best, qualification for the main competition of the Australian Open is almost certain. "I'll finish at 100, 101 or 102. It should work out under normal circumstances." The first 104 players are in the main draw at Grand Slam tournaments.

Thiem will now pause for around ten days before preparation for the coming season begins. Among other things, the 2020 US Open winner has already given his commitment to an exhibition event in Saudi Arabia.
