Dominic Thiem has waived the use of a protected ranking. The Austrian explained that in one of his interviews over the past few months. This can be well justified with a look at its ranking breakdown. Because although Thiem has not played a match at the ATP Tour 250 tournament on Mallorca since he was injured, his starting position is comfortable.
The points scored in 16 tournaments are currently in the ranking of Thiem, who ranks twelfth in the current world rankings. That makes a total of 3,225 meters. Dominic Thiem has only achieved 735 of these in the current season: 360 for the semi-finals in Madrid, 90 for the round of 16 in Rome and 45 for the quarter-finals in Doha. In addition, there are 180 for reaching the round of 16 at the Australian Open 2021. However, these are trumped by the 1,200 points for participation in the final in the year before. Just like the 50 points from the ATP Cup and the 10 points for the first round participation in Roland Garros.
Thiem at the Australian Open as number 16?
By the end of this year, only 800 points will be dropped - those for the final of the ATP Finals 2019 (the one from 2020 could also be here).
With his 2,425 points, Dominic Thiem would currently occupy position 16 in the ATP charts. And thus even fall into the first half of the seeded players at the Australian Open. For comparison: If you take the points only achieved in 2021 as a basis, Thiem would be number 101 in the world rankings.
