Thiem had retired in the semi-final against local hero Diego Schwartzman in 2019, but had retaliated against his Argentinian sidekick after that in Barcelona and especially in the final of the Erste Bank Open in Vienna. However, Schwartzman did not win the home win in Buenos Aires, losing to Marco Cecchinato in the deciding match. In doubles, Thiem and Schwartzman made it to the final together.

At that time, Nicolas Massu sat for the first time in the box of Thiem, but still on a trial basis. Meanwhile, the Chilean Davis Cup captain is traveling as a head coach in Team Thiem. Buenos Aires is traditionally a good ground for the Austrian number one: 2016 and 2018 Thiem took the title there.

Berrettini wins twice against Thiem

According to the ATP world ranking Dominic Thiem threatens next February the biggest threat from the Italian side: Matteo Berrettini has called for the ATP Tour 250 event. That the Roman whiz-starter gets along well with ashes, Berrettini has proved with his tournament success in Budapest in the spring of 2019, after which he was still in the final of Munich. Against Berrettini Thiem played three times in the fall of 2019 - in Vienna, the Austrian was the winner of the Court, in Shanghai and at the ATP Finals in London Berrettini.

Guido Pella will try for the eighth time in a row in the Argentine capital. With the left-hander Thiem had a long time problems, meanwhile the Lichtenwörther leads in the balance sheet with Pella with 3-2 victories.
