In which direction will Dominic Thiem continue?

Dominic Thiem actually wanted to start the clay court season this week, an appearance at Novak Djokovic's home tournament in Belgrade was planned. Nothing came of it, the left knee is still pinching the Austrian number one. A comeback in Madrid is now being planned, and the Thiem team is currently working on it in Traiskirchen.

The 2021 season has brought a real highlight so far - the five-set win against Nick Kyrgios - otherwise rather disillusionment. The last appearance dates from the tournament in Dubai, where Thiem lost to Lloyd Harris from South Africa in two sets. The circumstances were modest, as the 27-year-old emphasized in an interview with derstandard.at. Here are some excerpts ...

Dominic Thiem on ...

... his current physical problems: They are small problems, now it's the left knee. Last year, during the first lockdown, I had the same thing in my right knee. It didn't matter, I didn't have to cancel any tournaments because there weren't any. I've had ages to heal it.

... the lack of atmosphere in the stadiums: huge parts are lost. Corona has taken beautiful things, starting with traveling, moving freely. The bad things stay. It's difficult to play through week after week in these circumstances.

... his previous appearances in 2021: It was a lot of effort for relatively little income. I'm playing one of the most memorable matches in my life against local hero Kyrgios, I'm getting 2-0 down. The atmosphere in Melbourne was amazing, even though people didn't stand by me. And suddenly there was lockdown. I came into the locker room late at night, sweaty, and the facility was evacuated in the meantime - like a nuclear accident.
