The story of the Challenger final in Rennes is quickly told: After a hard-fought first set, Dominic Thiem didn't come together in the second round, so the defeat against Ugo Humbert in the capital of Brittany was ultimately clear. 3: 6 and 0: 6 was the result from the perspective of the Austrian, who thus also missed his first title in more than two years (US Open 2020).

"The first set wasn't that bad. I had a few chances to come back. He played fantastic tennis and I made some mistakes. At the beginning of the second I wasn't good, I wanted to stay in the game. Then the match slipped away from me." , the Lower Austrian was quoted as saying on the tournament homepage after the final.

Thiem with potential for improvement

Despite the clear bankruptcy in the final, Thiem was basically satisfied with his performances in Rennes, even though he didn't always show intoxicating tennis in his victories - the quarter-finals against Adrian Andreev should be mentioned here . "It was a good week. For the first time in a long time I've had many wins in a row," said Thiem.

In the final, after exhausting days, Thiem ultimately lacked the necessary freshness to counter the strong Humbert. "I wasn't at my best after playing for a week but I need to get used to it again," said the 29-year-old.

For Thiem it continues in Metz

By reaching the final in Rennes, Thiem improved in the world rankings to 182nd place, the declared goal of the season for the Lichtenwörther is to return to the top 100. For this reason, he is planning numerous tournament appearances in autumn, Thiem will start at the ATP-250 this week event in Metz.

There Thiem meets Richard Gasquet in the first lap, before it would go against Hubert Hurkacz, who was second. Thiem has good memories of the indoor tournament: in his only appearance so far, he reached the final six years ago.
