Dominic Thiem is gradually approaching the top of the world again

After his sensational run at the Generali Open in Kitzbühel, Filip Misolic will be the new number one in Austria on Monday. Behind the 20-year-old from Graz, another man is gradually approaching, who has already held third place in the world rankings in his career: Dominic Thiem .

In the coming week, Thiem will be in position 170 in the ranking, but the US Open champion of 2020 wants to leave this region of the world rankings as soon as possible. If you take a look at the past few weeks, this plan seems quite realistic: quarter-finals in Bastad, semi-finals in Gstaad, quarter-finals in Kitzbühel. The direction is right.

Thiem surprises himself

"The yield from the three tournaments was good, certainly better than expected," explained Thiem in the "ServusTV" interview one day after his end in the Gamsstadt. Now it will be a matter of finding his best tennis and finding the automatisms in his game again, according to the Lower Austrian.

After the appearances on sand, he is now looking forward to changing the surface, in terms of competition Thiem has not been on a hard court since March of last year. The Austrian's fans will have to be patient for the 28-year-old's next match, the tournament in Montreal is out of the question for him.

Thiem returns to Cincinnati

Accordingly, Thiem will only return to the tour at the ATP Masters 1000 event in Cincinnati, which begins on August 14, and the 250 tournament in Winston-Salem is also on the program before the US Open. In the USA it will also be important for the Lichtenwörther to continuously work his way up the world rankings. Because Thiem is pursuing a clear plan for the current season.

"The goal for the year is the top 100", explained the Austrian, so that "I can be in the main competition in Australia without any help". Thiem can currently still fall back on his protected ranking, but the former title holder will not need it at the US Open due to a wildcard: "That's absolutely great because I can then use the 'Protected' for another tournament."
