Slowly but surely, Dominic Thiem's plans for the fall are also becoming more concrete. After the build-up tournament in Winston-Salem, the Lower Austrian will travel to the US Open as an outsider in just over a week. The tournament that Thiem won in 2020, but was unable to defend the title last year due to injury. After that, it is unclear whether Thiem could possibly support the Austrian Davis Cup team in the international match with Pakistan in Tulln. It is also uncertain whether Thiem will start at the ATP events in Metz or San Diego.
One thing is certain, however: Thiem will start at the ATP 250 event in Tel Aviv from September 26th. The tournament will be held for the first time since 1996 due to the cancellation of the events in China. The 28-year-old is the first player to be wildcarded for the event in Israel. It is not yet known who will start next to Thiem. Absolute top names are not to be expected due to the date - in the days before the Laver Cup will take place with an extremely well-known line-up from a European point of view.
Thiem with rising form curve on sand
Dominic Thiem is currently on his way back to the top of the world, but is still outside the top 200 in the ATP ranking. Recently, the shape of the Lower Austrian has been on the up: in Bastad and Kitzbühel, the former third in the world rankings made it into the quarterfinals, and in Gstaad even into the semifinals. However, Thiem has not yet played a match on hard court this year. Accordingly, it is also unclear in what condition the Austrian will open in Winston-Salem.
Most recently, the 28-year-old surprisingly had to cancel his start at the ATP Masters 1000 event in Cincinnati due to a respiratory infection. The tournament in Winston-Salem will be Thiem's only preparatory tournament before the US Open.
