This was announced by the Spanish Tennis Association (RFET) on Wednesday evening. Gimeno was 34 years and 10 months old in 1972 when he won the French Open. Only Roger Federer (Switzerland) and the Australian Ken Rosewall were older in major triumphs.
Many tennis legends took part, including Gimeno's compatriot Rafael Nadal. "I heard the sad news of Andres Gimeno's death. Without a doubt one of the pioneers of tennis in Spain and a great athlete. Many thoughts about his family," Nadal wrote on Twitter.
