The cyclone "Idai" raged on the east coast of Africa with wind speeds of 200 km / h. Mozambique and parts of the Manicaland province in Zimbabwe are particularly affected by the devastation of the hurricane. In addition, extreme rains led to flooding in the southernmost part of Malawi. The sad result: 10,000 people had to flee from the floods, so far there have been up to 600 deaths, but the number will continue to increase.

Emergency shelters for victims

While Roger Federer is currently in action at the ATP tournament in Miami, the "Roger Federer Foundation" is jumping aside the victims of the cyclone. In the affected region in Malawi, six pre-school buildings were converted into evacuation centers for the homeless. More than 9,000 families as well as teachers from the Federer Foundation found a temporary place to stay.

Federer sympathizes

"Idai has caused an incredible disaster. It has once again hit the most vulnerable people in Malawi, Mozambique and Zimbabwe. It will take years for them to recover," said Federer, who has been with the "Match for Arfika for several years "Collects donations for children in need in Africa. "All my solidarity thoughts are with the thousands who have lost their loved ones or with the whole family," the 37-year-old sympathizes with the victims of the hurricane.
