Federer, Thiem, Djokovic - where they open the most successful

One thing is clear: At least Novak Djokovic will have looked at these statistics by number guru Craig O-Shaugnessy very closely.

Anyone who has already watched Dominic Thiem during training knows that the first bonuses in a training session will be won by Austria without much effort. And with a lot of slice to the outside, especially from the debut side. And amazingly, it's exactly this serve that makes Thiem look best in percentage terms. This is evident from statistics of the ATP.

Basically, there are six places to which a markup can be placed, three each on the buy-in and benefit side: outward, on the T, and into the man. The data includes the Masters 1000 Tournaments, the ATP Finals and the #NextGen Masters, collected from 2011 and for the current top ten in the world rankings. Quintessence: The variant that promises the most success is that of trying the first serve from the entry side through the middle.

Roger Federer in the Top 3 in every category

Here are the numbers:

1: Reverse side, middle (average win rate on the tour: 76.9%)

And the three players that statistically had the edge in this category in 2019 could all qualify for the ATP Finals in London.

Matteo Berrettini: 82.5%

Roger Federer: 81.1%

Stefanos Tsitsipas: 81.0%

2: advantage side, outward (average win rate: 75.6%)

Here Daniil Medvedev leads the ranking. The Russian likes to fall back on the straight, fast serve.

Daniil Medvedev: 79.4%

Roger Federer: 78.9%

Stefanos Tsitsipas: 78.6%

3: Reverse side, outward (Average win rate: 75.3%)

This is the flagship discipline of Dominic Thiem, see above.

1 Dominic Thiem: 78.4%

2 Matteo Berrettini: 77.3%

3 Roger Federer: 77.2%

4: advantage side, through the middle (average win rate: 73.0%)

This shows that speed is not everything. The two leaders split an average of eleven miles per hour - Berrettini is clearly ahead with 128 mph in the tempo.

1 Roger Federer: 75.1%

1 Matteo Berrettini: 75.1%

3 Stefanos Tsitsipas: 75.0%

5: Insured side, into the body (Average win rate: 65.4%)

Again Dominic Thiem has the nose in front, again from the debut side.

1 Dominic Thiem: 70.3%

2 Roger Federer: 69.8%

3 Rafael Nadal: 66.3%

6: Benefit side, in the body (Average win rate: 65.4%)

That in turn seems to be a special by Novak Djokovic.

1 Novak Djokovic: 68.5%

2 Roger Federer: 66.3%

3 Rafael Nadal: 65.4%
