Matteo Berrettini leads 1-0 in a direct sporting comparison with Feliciano Lopez, the only match between the two took place in Gstaad in 2018. Berrettini could also be ahead of the Spanish left-hander in another respect: namely as the man who cuts the best figure off the court (Exhibit A: Matteo's appearance at the Met Gala early last week). A title that Feliciano Lopez has had since living memory, or at least since the resignation of Björn Borg (the period between 1982 and 1997 when Feli joined the tour remains a black hole in this regard).

Of course, that's a matter of taste. The facts look like this: Feliciano Lopez is celebrating his 40th birthday today, he is in 117th position in the current ATP world rankings. Of course, this does not correspond to his earlier claims, in 2015 Lopez made it to position twelve in the individual. Seven titles can be found in his résumé, the first was in 2004 in the Wiener Stadthalle, the two youngest were also the most valuable: 2017 and 2019 in the Queen's Club in London, where he worked alongside Andy Murray two years ago still won the double.

Lopez as tournament director in Paris

Lopez also won his only Grand Slam title in pair skating, in 2016 at the side of namesake Marc Lopez in Roland Garros, with whom he was also successful at two other events. Meanwhile, Feli Lopez is a little tough, most recently at the US Open he had to admit defeat to his compatriot Bernabe Zapata Miralles in five sets in round one.

Lopez will not be bored after his active time either, as the tournament director of the ATP Masters 1000 tournament in Madrid he has long been one floor higher. And in one respect he is also optically ahead of Matteo Berrettini: in the category “Picture after a friend's wedding night”. Unforgotten how destroyed and at the same time great Feli Lopez presented himself after a difficult game at Rafael Nadal's vows. All the best!
