Almost exactly a month ago, Gerald Melzer contested his first Challenger event of the season in South America, the Viennese already made it to the quarter-finals in Ambato. What followed were strong performances on the other side of the Atlantic. A week later Melzer reached the semifinals in Lima, most recently in Santiao twice in a row in the round of the last eight.
The 31-year-old achieved this for the fifth time in a row in Bogota. On Thursday the Austrian celebrated a surprising two-set win against the tournament's number one, bowling local hero Daniel Elahi Galan out of the tournament. The Colombian is at least 107 on the ATP charts. In the quarter-finals, Melzer will now meet a Landsammn Galans, on Friday evening it will be against Nicolas Mejia.
