The punishment was announced by the anti-fraud unit TIU, sponsored by the tennis associations, on the edge of the Australian Open in Melbourne. The former top 100 player must also pay a $ 200,000 fine.

According to the TIU investigation, Souza postponed matches at second and third-class Challenger and Future tournaments in his home country, Mexico, the USA and the Czech Republic. In addition, the TIU considered it proven that the 31-year-old did not report bribes, destroyed evidence, and wanted to recruit other players to manipulate further matches.
