He has had lower calf pain for ten days, Monfils said on Twitter. An ultrasound had confirmed an injury, so he had to postpone his return to the tour. "I'm going to start special treatment today and hope to play again as soon as possible." /

Monfils has recently been unlucky. After a super run at the beginning of 2020 with tournament victories in Montpellier and Rotterdam as well as the finals in Dubai - and an interim winning streak of twelve games - "La Monf" did not win a match after the tour resumed in August. His two appearances in 2021, at the ATP Cup and the Australian Open, also ended with two defeats.

His place in the Monte Carlo tableau - Monfils should have played against Pablo Andujar - will be taken by a lucky loser.

Monfils and Svitolina with private luck

In his private life, however, things are going better: just last week he proposed marriage to girlfriend Elina Svitolina and he was by no means rubbish with his allegedly 700,000 euro engagement ring. The two had announced a break in relationship just weeks earlier.
