Generali Open 2022: German derby with side effects

After all: Michael Venus has already lost in the Davis Cup

It is quite possible that the German Davis Cup boss Michael Kohlmann will get in the car this Friday and tackle the few kilometers from Munich in the direction of Kitzbühel. Kohlmann would have two reasons for this: On the one hand, of course, Yannick Hanfmann, who is in the semi-finals after his surprising but well-deserved victory against Dominic Thiem. And he's still waiting for his opponent: The game between Filip Misolic and Dusan Lajovic was not kicked off on Thursday evening because the weather in Kitzbühel had become too unsettled.

At least as much attention will be paid in German tennis to the semifinals in doubles between Kevin Krawietz and Andreas Mies against Tim Pütz and Michael Venus on the other side. Because there are three contenders for probably only two open places in the German Davis Cup team for the intermediate round in Hamburg in September.

Pütz/Venus beat "KraMIes" in Halle

Kohlmann is literally spoiled for choice: Tim Pütz, for example, has started nine times for Germany in doubles. And won all nine games. Incidentally, the last five alongside Kevin Krawietz. He, in turn, has a record of 8:0. Krawietz won the missing three matches together with Andreas Mies.

In other words, in the first doubles semi-final of the Generali Open 2022, three men will be on the court who have never lost a Davis Cup game. Michael Venus, who "only" won seven of twelve doubles matches for Australia, provides grounding.

Nominations will be made at the time of the tournament in Cincinnati, so all candidates will still have at least one practical test. But a small statement in Kitzbühel would not hurt. By the way, there was already a match-up like this Friday this year: In the semifinals in HalleWestfalen, Pütz/Venus won 7:5 and 7:5.
