Fognini had undergone surgery on both ankles at the start of the corona break. Smaller interventions that did not put the Italian out of action for too long. A return for the US hard court tournaments from Cincinnati and at the US Open was probably not planned from the start. Especially since Fognini was rarely able to win anything at both events - except perhaps in 2015, when he caught up with Rafael Nadal 0: 2 and was still winning the match.

So in all likelihood the Austrian tennis fans can look forward to. After Corrado Barazzutti, Italy's Davis Cup captain and at the same time coach of Fabio Fognini, his protégé will serve at the Generali Open in Kitzbühel. The traditional tournament is scheduled for the second week of the US Open, with the main field being played from September 8th to 13th.

“Fabio knows what to do after the injury and works very hard. He trains every day from 10 a.m. to 2.30 p.m. I am very satisfied with his commitment and hard work, ”Barazzutti is quoted on the ubitennis portal.

“I think Fabio will be there in two weeks. We will be working in Rome for four weeks to prepare for Kitzbühel what his comeback will be. If everything goes according to plan, Fabio will play there. ”Fognini was last at the Generali Open in 2017. At that time, the now 33-year-old reached the semi-finals, where he lost to eventual tournament winner Philipp Kohlschreiber . As was the case two years ago, however, at the time in the quarter-finals.
