Full house on Tuesday evening in Kitzbühel. And Dominic Thiem did not disappoint the Austrian fans. Because the 2020 US Open champion and Kitzbühel winner from the year before won against Alexander Shevchenko 6: 4 and 6: 2 and thus made it into the round of 16 of the Generali Open.
For 21-year-old Shevchenko, who has been training with Thiem's ex-coach Günter Bresnik - with interruptions - for ten years, the appearance in the night session was the greatest of his career. And the Russian didn't want to be accused of not having tried everything. Shevchenko hammered every ball relentlessly, but had to fend off break points in the first game. So it was only a matter of time before Thiem got the youngster's serve. And after 52 minutes of play it was safely served to make it 6:4.
Thiem on Wednesday against Ofner
In the second act, Thiem struck in the third game and took a 2-1 lead. But surprisingly gave up his serve immediately. Up to that point, Shevchenko hadn't had a single break point. That was again Thiem too much, he got the next break right away. And the next to 5:2. After 88 minutes, the favorite had cleared the first hurdle in Kitzbühel.
Thiem will play on Wednesday (from around 4:30 p.m. live on ServusTV and in our ticker) against Sebastian Ofner, who put in an extraordinary fighting performance against Richard Gasquet. After losing the first set, Ofner was behind with a break in both rounds two and three against the French veteran, but made a comeback in each case and thus won his third match in a row in Kitzbühel 2022. The Styrian had previously been successful in two qualifying games remained.
Two more Austrians are also in action on Wednesday: In the second match after 11 a.m. Jurij Rodionov meets Roberto Bautista Agut, then Filip Misolic challenges the Spanish veteran Pablo Andujar.
