Lukas Neumayer convinced in Kitzbühel

If you play your first match at the ATP Tour level, two things could help you: on the one hand, the support of the audience. On the other hand, an early break to get the initial nervousness under control. Lukas Neumayer was granted both of these at the Generali Open 2021 on Tuesday, but the Austrian youngster just has to grieve a little that it was not enough to make it into the second round. Neumayer passed a talent test, but lost to Mario Vilella Martinez 7: 6 (4), 5: 7 and 4: 6

Neumayer, listed on position 980 in the ATP world rankings before the successful qualification in Kitzbühel, started well and was then able to compensate for a short sag with a courageous game. The first set went into the tiebreak, Neumayer prevailed there 7: 4 with strong nerves. In the second act, the 18-year-old Austrian was only two points away from moving into the second round with a score of 5: 4 - but then gave up three games in a row. And with it the second sentence.

The decision started again very promisingly for the local hero: Neumayer made the break to 2-0, but had to give up his service immediately. When the score was 4: 3, Neumayer missed a break chance, it got bitter in the ninth game: The Austrian led with 40:15 on his own serve, then slipped. At the next point, Martinez's ball dripped from the net tape into the field at the debut. Then the Spaniard used his first chance to make it 5: 4 - and served with slight problems. For Lukas Neumayer it was still a great experience in the very well-attended Kitzbühel Stadium.
