The training work of TennisBase Oberhaching during the corona pandemic is also bearing fruit at the Generali Open: After Yannick Hanfmann won the ATP Challenger tournament in Todi a few days ago, the 28-year-old is now in the quarter-finals in Kitzbühel. And there he meets his training partner Maximilian Marterer, who showed the next strong performance after his opening success against Dennis Novak.
Marterer served Hubert Hurkacz, the number five of the tournament, humorless with 6: 1 and 6: 4. Much to the satisfaction of the coaches from the Bavarian Tennis Association, Tobias Summerer and Lukas Wolff, who came to Kitzbühel. And afterwards the two of them also enjoyed Hanfmann, who was successful against Dusan Lajovic after 2:20 hours of play with 4: 6, 6: 3 and 6: 4.
First duel for Marterer and Hanfmann on the ATP tour
"At the back I would have made it a little easier for myself if I had lost the penultimate game more smoothly, that would have been easier for my head," said Hanfmann immediately after the match. “But then it was a great feeling to serve it up.” Regarding the match against his buddy, the current number 118 in the ATP world rankings said: “It's a bit strange that we're playing in the quarter-finals here. The Maxi came as an alternate, I arrived here as a qualifier. It's kind of madness. We were always eating the last few evenings, and that won't change today. But it will probably be a good match. "
Although Marterer and Hanfmann know each other very well, the meeting in Kitzbühel will be a premiere: The two have never played against each other on the ATP tour.
