Gilles Simon will end his career at the end of the year

2022 has been a tough year for tennis fans so far. Juan Martin del Potro, Kevin Anderson, Tommy Robredo, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and now Gilles Simon - after there were hardly any prominent resignations on the ATP tour last year, there are quite a few this year. In any case, with the Frenchman Simon, another veteran announced his early retirement from professional tennis.

Just during the clash between Novak Djokovic and the personified young guard, Carlos Alcaraz, the 37-year-old declared that he wanted to end his career at the end of the year. "It was a magical, wonderful and extraordinary adventure. It will end at the end of the year. Thank you to everyone who made it possible," wrote the Frenchman on Twitter on Saturday. Simon had won 14 titles in his career and had advanced to sixth place in the world rankings in 2009.

Simon with farewell without sadness

In any case, the former world number six wants to leave without much sorrow, as he emphasized: "There is no sadness, there is no regret. Just the will to give everything I have left. In every game, to the end," said Simon. Who has only been able to play four matches in the main draw of ATP events in the 2022 calendar year. The 37-year-old lost three of them.

The Frenchman's greatest career success was the triumph at the ATP 500 event in Hamburg, in Madrid 2008 Simon would have struck almost at the ATP Masters 1000 level, but then had to admit defeat to the Scot Andy Murray in the final. In addition to Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, French tennis will have to (slowly) say goodbye to another representative of an extremely successful generation in the 2022 calendar year.
