Boris Becker and Günter Bresnik worked together for almost exactly one year. And that was almost exactly 30 years ago. In the summer of 1992, the Austrian started as a trainer for the six-time Grand Slam champion. A collaboration that only lasted twelve months. Confidentiality was agreed on the reasons for the separation. which Bresnik still adheres to today.
It has been clear since last week: Becker has to go to prison for two and a half years for misconduct in his bankruptcy process. A judgment that Becker's former trainer cannot really understand. "He's supposed to make up for the financial damage, but he doesn't belong in jail, he didn't endanger anyone. I don't see the point in that," Bresnik told the Standard .
Bresnik sees malice against Becker as inappropriate
Bresnik also considers malice for the current situation in which Germany's tennis legend is inappropriate. "You don't have his experience, you can't put yourself in his situation. You weren't a Wimbledon winner at the age of 17," said Bresnik in the direction of those people who now attest Becker's stupidity.
According to Bresnik, Becker was always a "light figure". "Things flowed to him. He obviously didn't notice that this automatism would no longer work at some point. And no more money would flow," Bresnik is quoted as saying. An impression that would have been strengthened at a dinner between the two about a year ago. Back then, Becker "would have thought that everything wasn't bad and would be fine again. He obviously denied reality."
The environment of the former high-flyer cannot be held responsible for this crash either. In terms of personnel, Becker could only change one thing, as Bresnik thinks: "Maybe he shouldn't have parted ways with Ion Tiriac." And the ex-wives Becker are not to blame either. "Barbara was a strong woman. Boris was always very generous in divorce."
