Holger Rune has a lot planned for the coming season

Holger Rune is not a person of false modesty. No, the young Dane wears his heart on his sleeve - and accordingly makes little secret of the goals the Scandinavian has in mind for the coming months and years. Probably the most central thing: becoming number one in the world rankings. And better early than late. "It's my goal to be number one - why not next year?" Rune recently told Eurosport on the sidelines of the Nitto ATP finals.

The 19-year-old finally catapulted himself into the media limelight just a few days ago in Paris-Bercy: where Rune eliminated five top 10 players in a tournament and especially with the final victory over the 21-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic: "I've been working every day and in every tournament I've tried to get better and the little things have improved a bit over the year and now here at the end of the year everything is going super well, so I'm very satisfied and happy about it," said the Dane.

Rune is currently the first substitute at the Nitto ATP Finals, but will wait in vain for an assignment. "I would have been super excited to just go out there and play, for the first time here at the Nitto ATP Finals, that would have been a great experience," said Rune, who certainly wouldn't have been impressed by the stage in Turin: "I would honestly treat it like any other tournament, just take it one game at a time and see how far it can go, but it's hard to predict," said the teenager.

In terms of world rankings, Holger Rune will end the season just outside the top ten in eleventh place - shortly before the end of the season, Pole Hubert Hurkacz had pushed ahead of Rune. Holger Rune is certain of a good starting position for the Australian Open, which will provide the first big highlight of the coming season in January. And Down Under, the 19-year-old could also take the next step to get a little closer to his big goal.
