At the end of 2019 everything was still good: Garcia and Mladenovic with the Fed Cup trophy

The French series hung by a thread last Monday: Fiona Ferro just made it to 49th place in the WTA world rankings. But it happened very recently - not a single woman from the Grand Nation is among the top 50 players in the world. For the first time since 1986.

Which is all the more astonishing as the last traditional Fed Cup went to France. At the end of 2019 it was when Kristina Mladenovic and Caroline Garcia snatched the title away from world number one Ashleigh Barty in front of their home crowd in Australia. On top of that with the victory in doubles, for which the once best friends Mladenovic and Garcia had once again pulled together.

Almost as legendary as the sporting success of the French women back then in Perth: The fall of Captain Julien Benneteau at the victory celebration, which ended with a leg in a cast.

So there are currently four French women who can insist on at least a two-digit ranking. In comparison, the top 100 includes a total of 17 players from the USA and ten from the Czech Republic.

Here is the current WTA world rankings
