Jannik Sinner was not lucky in 2022

Jannik Sinner is really not lucky in the current season. On Saturday, the South Tyrolean knuckled in the semifinals of Sofia's ATP 250 tournament against Holger Rune and had to involuntarily end the match due to this injury. Hours later, the 21-year-old also had to cancel his planned start at the ATP 500 tournament in Astana.

Already at the beginning of the season, Sinner was struggling with physical problems: After the Australian Open, the Italian missed the event in Rotterdam due to a COVID-19 infection, and at the Sunshine Double in Indian Wells and Miami, things didn’t go according to plan for Sinner either . First, he was unable to play in the round of 16 duel against Nick Kyrgios in the Californian desert due to illness, but then blisters on his foot thwarted his plans in Florida.

Submission at the French Open

The clay court season was also anything but satisfactory for Sinner: while he was initially only plagued by slight hip problems in Rome, he had to give up in the French Open round of 16 against Andrey Rublev due to a knee injury. An extremely bitter setback for the youngster, especially given the good draw.

In the summer, Sinner was spared injuries, but from a sporting point of view he had to cope with two extremely bitter defeats. First he lost a 2-0 set lead against Novak Djokovic in the Wimbledon quarter-finals, and at the US Open Sinner even missed a match point against Carlos Alcaraz. All that remained for Sinner was frustration, for his two opponents victory in the tournament a little later. Two bankruptcies that fit seamlessly into the unbelievable streak of bad luck of the world ranking tenth.
