The veterinarian had heart surgery in December and never recovered from it. Del Potro senior always stayed in the background, although he often accompanied his son on his tennis career at a young age.
Del Potro Jr. shared an emotional message addressed to his father on Tuesday. "You left us with a broken heart, but we know that you now rest in peace, just as you deserved," wrote Juan Marin. "Now you are with your other angel, and I ask you to keep an eye on my mother, my sister and me from above."
And further: "You are our true and only champion. Thank you for raising me with values, with honesty, with sacrifices and for doing the impossible to make my dream of tennis a reality. I don't know how I do should live without you, but I will definitely apply everything and never give up, as you taught me to do. I love you, Pa !! "
