The former world number one from Kiel was defeated by the unseen Czech Katerina Siniakova with 3: 6, 1: 6. Siniakova, number 61 in the world rankings, repeatedly attacked the second serve of the three-time major winner Kerber, who made five double mistakes. Julia Görges (Bad Oldesloe) had also lost her opening match in Rome.

For Kerber, the tournament was an endurance test before the French Open on September 27, which she was the only Grand Slam tournament not yet able to win. At the US Open, the 32-year-old failed in the round of 16 due to the later semi-finalist Jennifer Brady (USA). Kerber had only managed to take part in the tournament in New York at short notice.
