Knee problems: US Open winner Andreescu not in Auckland

US Open winner Bianca Andreescu is worried about her participation in the Australian Open in Melbourne.

The 19-year-old Canadian has to pause due to ongoing knee problems and therefore canceled her participation in the WTA tournament in Auckland (January 6th to 12th). The Australian Open will start on January 20th.

"I am very disappointed, but I will listen to the advice of the doctors and take no risks," Andreescu is quoted in a statement by the tournament management in Auckland. The fifth in the world rankings had already given up at the WTA Finals in Shenzhen in late October in a group game against the Czech Karolina Pliskova because of her knee problems.

Andreescu was number one in Auckland. Instead, Serena Williams (USA) is moving to this position.

Andreescu first attracted attention in Auckland in 2019 when she was ranked 152 in the world. reached the final out of the qualification, in which she lost to Julia Görges in three sets. The dream season followed with victories in Indian Wells, Toronto and at the US Open. However, Andreescu also had to suspend due to injury.
