At the age of 34, it's over: As he announced on social media, Leonardo Mayer ended his active career on Thursday. "Tennis has been a great pleasure and has been part of my life since I was a child. I feel that the time has come to close this wonderful chapter of my life as a player," wrote the Argentine.

Mayer won two titles in his career: The gaucho won both 2014 and 2017 at Hamburg's Rothenbaum. Also unforgettable is the second round game against Roger Federer at the ATP 1000 tournament in Shanghai, where Mayer missed five match points against the now 20-time Grand Slam champion in 2014 and ultimately lost the game in the tie-break of the third set.

The memories of the Davis Cup, however, should be nicer: In 2015, the former world number 21 beat. in the longest match in Davis Cup history, the Brazilian Joao Souza after six hours and 43 minutes with 7: 6 (4), 7: 6 (5), 5: 7, 5: 7 and 15:13 . The following year, Mayer and the Argentine team even got "the ugliest salad bowl in the world".

Not least because of this, teammate Juan Martin del Potro sent emotional words to his compatriot via Twitter after Mayer's retirement: "Leo, congratulations on your enormous career. It is a pleasure to have grown together with you. I wish you all the best in yours new stage and thank you forever for winning the Davis Cup! I love you, my friend !!! "
