The good news for Matteo Berrettini is perhaps this: it is not the abdominal muscles that are preventing him from doing his job this time. But the right hitting hand. And it seems like there's hope for Berrettini fans that the hiatus won't be that long after all. The Italian speaks on Instagram that it was only a small operation. And that he and his team are already making plans again for when things will start again on the court.

Berrettini had to withdraw before the start of the ATP Masters 1000 tournament in Miami, so far the season has been pretty decent. At the Australian Open, the Roman reached the semifinals, where he lost to Rafael Nadal. Most recently in Indian Wells, Berrettini was eliminated in the round of 16 against Miomir Kecmanovic after three tough sets.

Matteo Berrettini will lose his eighth place in the annual ranking, the Race to Turin, after the reckoning in Miami. After a relatively short injury break, the 25-year-old will hopefully still have many opportunities to make the next home game at the ATP Finals in Turin clear. There, however, Berrettini had to give up in the match against Alexander Zverev last year. Because of an abdominal muscle injury.
