Matteo Berrettini has had a difficult year

Matteo Berrettini 's surprising effort ultimately didn't pay off for the Italian Davis Cup team. The 26-year-old, who had originally pulled out of the finals in Malaga due to foot problems, had to admit defeat in two tight sets alongside Fabio Fognini to Canadians Félix Auger-Aliassime and Vasek Pospisil.

"Obviously I wasn't at my best. I didn't expect that. I did my best, but it wasn't enough," Berrettini said after the match. "It's very painful, but I gave everything I had."

For Berrettini, a messed-up season ended in yet another disappointment. The Italian had an operation on his right hand in March and then missed the French Open in Paris, among other things. Immediately after his comeback, the 26-year-old won his only two titles of the season in Stuttgart and London's Queen's Club, but the previous year's finalist missed the major event in Wimbledon due to a corona infection.

"When I was playing my best, I got Corona before the most important tournament of the year for me," Berrettini looked back. After that, it wasn't easy to remain optimistic. Overall, however, the world number 16 was shown. not unhappy with his performances: "After all the difficulties I had, I can't say it was a bad season."
