Novak Djokovic will apparently not play in Madrid this year

Unsurprisingly, Novak Djokovic canceled his start at the ATP Masters 1000 event in Miami after his victory at the Australian Open, the renouncement of another event in this tournament category is more unexpected. As reported by the Serbian daily Blic , the world number one will not start in Madrid.

The reason for this is said to be Djokovic's slightly changed tournament calendar: The Serb will be playing in his hometown Belgrade after the event in Monte Carlo and will only return to the tour in Rome in preparation for the French Open.

Djokovic with three triumphs in Madrid

Should Djokovic actually do without the event in Madrid, the organizers around tournament director Feliciano Lopez would lose their defending champion. The 18-time Grand Slam winner was crowned winner for the third time two years ago in the Spanish capital, and last season the event had to be canceled due to the corona pandemic.

Djokovic is currently preparing for the first big clay court classic of the season in Monte Carlo. The starting shot for the ATP Masters 1000 tournament in the Principality will be given on April 11th.
