Three tournament wins within three weeks - you wouldn't have expected that after Daniil Medvedev's rather modest start to the season. In Rotterdam and Doha, Gil Cervara sat in the Russian's box in the tried and tested manner, while the coach took a break in Dubai. But he also found the time to give the tennismajors.com portal a detailed interview, in which Cervara mainly spoke about the developments after the end of Melbourne against Sebastian Korda. But also about the peculiarities that make up the person and player Daniil Medvedev.

So Gil Cervara about…

… the elimination at the Australian Open:

He lost to the wrong player in the tournament at that point, Sebastian Korda. This match gave us a lot to analyze. But even after Australia I was convinced that he played at a great level, that he could go far in the tournament and that we shouldn't question a billion things. But yes: When we came back from Australia, his confidence was gone. There was nothing.

… the sometimes difficult mindset of his protégé :

I remember when he won Bercy and the 2020 Masters. He lost in Vienna (in the quarterfinals against Kevin Anderson) and he was looking for any reasons why he played badly. He had incredible moments. I told him before the tournament (at Paris-Bercy) that he had the right to beat himself up and think he was playing badly. But that wasn't my opinion.

… about the prospects in Indian Wells:

He actually never liked playing in the desert. But Doha and Dubai brushed that aside. E thought it was impossible to play well there. But it is not. But it will be different because Indian Wells is something special with the surface, the heat, the cold, the dryness, the balls. Miami is something else again, but there's no reason Daniil couldn't play well there.
