Miami 2021: Less prize money, no quarantine, but a player bubble

The first details about the combined ATP / WTA event in Miami, which is scheduled to start on March 22, have come to light: There should be significantly less prize money, but at least the players do not have to be in quarantine, as they did in Australia.

At his final press conference in Melbourne, Rafael Nadal briefly asked the group where the next quarantine would be on the tennis tour - not out of bad will, but simply to make people think about when the players will enter again under similarly safe conditions Tournament could start like the Australian Open. One of the possible answers to Rafa's question: not in Miami. Because there the players should be able to take part in the combined WTA and ATP event without isolation after entering the country.

A negative COVID-19 test is first required before boarding the plane to the USA. After arrival, the test is carried out again, then it goes to the hotel, where the result of this test is to be awaited. A negative result would not entitle the participants to pursue tourist amusements on Miami Beach: A bubble is planned in which Djokovic , Osaka and Co. move, similar to the one at the US Open, where the whole tennis crowd only between the hotel and the complex was carted back and forth.

In contrast to New York 2020, however, viewers should be allowed, we are talking about up to 20 percent of the actual capacity. Which is also the reason that the prize money is significantly lower than that at the event two years ago: Ashleigh Barty and Roger Federer each received 1,354,000 US dollars for their victories at the Hard Rock Stadium in 2019. This time the winner's check is said to have an amount of 300,110 US dollars.
