"The players have to reveal more about themselves than on Twitter or Facebook. There has to be a relationship with the fans who have to be able to say, I think it's great and it's stupid," said Stich at the SPOBIS sports business congress in Düsseldorf.

The 51-year-old cited top stars Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic as examples: "I am close to tennis, but I actually know very little about them as people."

As part of the "Berlin becomes tennis capital again" panel, Stich welcomed the reintroduction of a women's tournament on the Spree in the coming early summer. "Berlin as the capital offers itself for this, but there is also a general need for tennis, because it is no longer an elitist sport and is a real popular sport in society. Tennis is a sleeping giant," said the native of Pinneberger the perspectives of the grass tournament in the Steffi Graf Stadium in Berlin.
